THE 50TH ANNUAL PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS

The 50th annual Emmy Awards accented those links between past and present, between the universal and the personal, and between the real world and TV-as-chronicler-of-our-time. The 50th Emmys first and foremost celebrated TV's ability to bring the world into our living rooms. James Moll directed a series of short “film packages” called “America is Watching.” Together with producer June Beallor, Moll toured the country asking Americans to describe television's impact upon their lives. Featured in the segments was a musician from the center of New Orleans Jazz “Preservation Hall,” as well as firemen, factory workers, war veterans, and even a cancer survivor who credits “Murphy Brown” for bringing comfort and understanding during a this frightening, life-threatening period of her life.
